The connection here made between restraint (nirodha)
and transformation (parinamah) is rich in wisdom
for actors and relates to Zeami's observations:
"It is often commented on by audience that
'many times a performance is effective when the
actor does nothing'. Such an accomplishment results
from the actor's greatest, most secret skill......Thus
to speak of a actor 'doing nothing' actually
signifies that interval which exists between
two physical actions. When one examines why this
interval 'when nothing happens' may seem so fascinating,
it is surely because of the fact that, at bottom,
the artist never relaxes his inner tension"
Yoga and meditation can give a practical accompaniment
to the gaining of major insights into the art
of the actor.
